Background
CAIX (Carbonic Anhydrase IX) protein, a transmembrane enzyme, is overexpressed in various solid tumors, including renal cell carcinoma. It catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate ions and protons, playing a crucial role in pH regulation and acid-base balance within the tumor microenvironment. CAIX facilitates tumor cell survival, migration, and invasion by maintaining an acidic extracellular pH and promoting angiogenesis. Its selective expression in tumor tissues makes CAIX an attractive target for cancer therapy. Inhibiting CAIX activity disrupts tumor growth and metastasis, highlighting its significance as a diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker in oncology.
