Background
CD11b, also known as integrin alpha-M, is a cell surface glycoprotein primarily expressed on the surface of myeloid cells, including monocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes. It is a subunit of the integrin alpha-M beta-2 heterodimer, also known as Mac-1 or CR3. CD11b plays a crucial role in cell adhesion, migration, phagocytosis, and immune cell signaling. By binding to various ligands such as ICAM-1, ICAM-2, and fibrinogen, CD11b mediates interactions between immune cells and their targets, facilitating immune responses, inflammation, and host defense against pathogens. Dysregulation of CD11b expression or function is associated with various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Understanding the role of CD11b in immune regulation is essential for developing targeted therapies to modulate immune responses in health and disease.
