  • Background
    • Background

CD8, or cluster of differentiation 8, is a glycoprotein found on the surface of cytotoxic T cells, also known as CD8+ T cells. These cells are a vital component of the immune system, responsible for recognizing and destroying cells infected with viruses, bacteria, or cancerous cells. CD8 binds to major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) molecules presenting antigenic peptides, initiating the activation of cytotoxic T cells. The presence of CD8 on the cell surface serves as a marker for these effector T cells, crucial for mounting an effective immune response against pathogens and tumors.
